Charity Checkout was founded in 2012 by Chester Mojay-Sinclare. Chester was inspired by his experiences working in the charity sector during his gap year. He identified the issues many charities faced when trying to fundraise online without the digital resources they needed. It became his ambition to solve this problem and help charities improve the way they fundraise online.
In 2012, Charity Checkout launched it’s first online fundraising tool for charities: a simple charity payment gateway. This was a huge success with the thousands of small charities who were looking for a cost-effective way of accepting online donations with Gift Aid. The organisation began to grow by securing investment, leasing offices and hiring its first employees.
Over the following years the team grew rapidly to over 20 employees, and Charity Checkout became one of the leading providers of online fundraising tools for charities.
In 2015 Charity Checkout began working on a new generation of fundraising tools for charities and companies, putting into practice our years of first hand experience. In late 2016, after two years of intense investment, Charity Checkout started to launch its innovative suite of new products and services.
Charity Checkout now offers everything a charity needs from simple, mobile optimised websites to a fully white-label fundraising platform and has helped raise over £18,000,000 for charity.
Chester Mojay-Sinclare, Founder & CEO
Chester is the founder and CEO of Charity Checkout. He has almost 10 years experience in the third sector, having launched multiple fundraising sites in the UK and internationally. Chester also advises on social entrepreneurship, digital transformation for charities and online fundraising. This ranges from extensive consultancy experience to speaking in the House of Lords, as a digital expert in the charity sector.
Chester is a regular judge at the UK National Business Awards. He also previously represented the UK at the Global Student Entrepreneurship Awards, in the early days of Charity Checkout.
Martin Bysh, CTO
Martin is CTO and Chairman of Charity Checkout. He has more than 30 years experience in technology and 20 years in entrepreneurship, having built and sold three technology businesses in areas from market research to social networking. He started his career as an assembly language programmer in the field of computer games. After a string of chart-topping hits, Martin moved into web technologies in the mid 90s, building and running a web development agency. He went on to found a series of consumer web businesses, before finally starting Charity Checkout with Chester in 2012.
Martin brings this deep experience to his role heading up technology at Charity Checkout. He also speaks at various tech events around the world, advises tech companies across a range of fields and works with the Cabinet Office’s Behavioural Insight Team on their rapid insights tool, “Predictiv”.
Eddie Allenby, Head of Charity Development
Eddie is Head of Charity Development at Charity Checkout. He has seven years experience in management across multiple industries. This includes growing a digital marketing and technology startup from three to thirty employees in two years, helping it to become one of Australia’s fastest growing agencies.
Since his move back to the UK, Eddie has been passionately using his experience in technology and digital marketing to help charities develop their digital strategies. He has helped hundreds of charities to advance their relationships with donors and to find creative to ways to fundraise online.
Ben Wardle, Non-Executive Director
Ben joined the Charity Checkout board as lead investor for an Angel investment round in 2012. Drawing on his experience of growing and exiting a technology business he provides strategic advice and direction to this exciting company.
As the co-author of Viral Politics in 2001 Ben was a pioneer in using technology for campaigning and fundraising. Combining entrepreneurship with delivering social good at Charity Checkout provides a wonderful way to distract him from the trials and tribulations of supporting Arsenal FC
A web veteran Ben delivered platforms for clients such as: Guide Dogs, Arts Council England and Schwarzkopf. He has also steered the global delivery of web and mobile experiences for Belron in 33 countries and 19 languages, which generate over £300m in annual revenue.
UnLtd – The Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs is a charitable organisation set up by seven organisations that promote social entrepreneurship. UnLtd has supported Charity Checkout since its conception, mostly recently naming us as one their The Big Venture Challenge Winners in 2014.
University College London & UCL Business Plc
UCL aims to inspire a spirit of enterprise across UCL: to ensure that the economic and societal benefits are fully realised. Charity Checkout has it roots at UCL, as the idea was conceived by its founder while he was an undergraduate student there. UCL and UCL Business Plc have invested in Charity Checkout and remain a shareholder to this day.
Andrew Jacobs is the co-founder of Giraffe, the successful restaurant chain acquired by Tesco for £49m in 2013. Andrew was the first investor in Charity Checkout, after being impressed by the vision of the company to revolutionise online fundraising.
Stephen Lucas was one of our first investors, joining Andrew in his support of Charity Checkout in 2012. Stephen is one of the world’s most successful lawyers, having been listed as the top banking and finance lawyer in The Chambers 100 List of UK Best Business Lawyers. He is currently a Partner at Kirkland & Ellis International LLP.
